    Sūtra Netī

Sūtra Netī (सूत्र नेती) is a shatkarma (purification) practice that involves passing a thin catheter or thread through the nasal passages to cleanse them. The name means “thread cleansing” (sūtra = thread, netī = cleansing). The Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā (2.29–2.30) presents netī as a means of cleansing the air passageways of the head, traditionally accomplished with either water (jala netī) or string (sūtra netī).

This practice is more advanced than Jāla Netī and requires careful instruction to perform safely.

    Origins

The Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā (2.29–2.30) describes netī as the third of the six purification practices, following dhautī and bastī. The Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā provides additional details, recommending the use of a waxed thread or thin catheter. The practice is traditionally performed after mastering Jāla Netī, as it requires greater sensitivity and control.

    Technique

The practitioner uses a thin, flexible catheter or waxed cotton thread, approximately 12–15 inches in length. One end is gently inserted into one nostril and guided through the nasal passage until it emerges from the mouth. The end is then grasped and pulled through, creating a gentle cleaning action.

The process is repeated with the other nostril. After the practice, the nasal passages are rinsed with Jāla Netī.

    Benefits (as claimed by tradition)

    Traditional texts claim Sūtra Netī:

    • Deeply cleanses the nasal passages
    • Removes stubborn mucus and blockages
    • Improves breathing and sense of smell
    • Benefits the eyes and brain through connected passages
    • Enhances the effectiveness of prāṇāyāma

The Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā states that it “purifies the skull” and “opens the passages above the palate.”

    In modern practice

Sūtra Netī is practiced in traditional Hatha Yoga schools, though it is less common than Jāla Netī due to its more invasive nature. Some ENT specialists use similar techniques with medical-grade catheters for chronic sinus conditions. The practice requires careful instruction and should not be attempted without proper guidance. Modern practitioners typically use commercially available neti catheters made of rubber or silicone.

    Verification notes

    • The Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā reference (2.29–2.30) follows the critical edition (Sinh 1914, GRETIL).
    • The Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā reference follows the Saraswati (1996) edition.
    • The practice should be learned under the guidance of an experienced teacher to avoid injury to the delicate nasal tissues.
