Sukhasana
Sukhasana is a simple seated yoga posture, also known as the easy pose.
Overview
Sukhasana, meaning “easy posture,” is the most accessible cross-legged sitting position in yoga. It is the posture most commonly used by beginners for meditation and pranayama, and is designed to be comfortable enough for extended practice.
Method/Content
The practitioner sits with legs crossed at the shins, each foot placed beneath the opposite knee. The spine is kept straight but not rigid, the shoulders are relaxed, and the hands rest on the knees. The posture should feel stable and comfortable, with the knees dropping naturally toward the floor. The eyes may be closed or half-closed with a soft gaze.
Purpose/Benefits
Sukhasana provides a comfortable foundation for meditation and breathing practices. It gently opens the hips and stretches the knees and ankles. The simplicity of the posture allows the practitioner to focus attention on the breath and inner experience rather than physical discomfort.
