Sudarshana Homa (Fire Ritual of Vishnu’s Discus)
Sudarshana Homa is a Hindu fire ritual performed using the Sudarshana mantra for protection, healing, and the removal of obstacles.
Overview
Sudarshana Homa is dedicated to the Sudarshana Chakra (the divine discus) of Lord Vishnu, which represents the cosmic power that destroys evil and protects the righteous. The ritual involves chanting the Sudarshana mantra while offering oblations into a consecrated fire. It is performed for protection from enemies, removal of black magic, healing of diseases, and the fulfillment of desires.
Method/Content
The homa is performed in a fire altar with specific materials including ghee, herbs, and medicinal plants. The ritual begins with the invocation of Sudarshana and the purification of the worship space. The Sudarshana mantra (beginning with “Om Sudarshanaya Vidmahe…”) is chanted repeatedly while offerings are made into the fire. The complete ritual may involve 1,008 to 11,000 mantra repetitions and takes several hours. The fire ceremony is followed by the distribution of sacred ash and prasad.
Purpose/Benefits
Sudarshana Homa is believed to provide powerful protection from all forms of danger—physical, mental, and spiritual. It is performed to remove black magic, cure mysterious illnesses, and destroy obstacles to success. The ritual is said to invoke the cosmic protective power of Vishnu, creating an impenetrable shield around the devotee and their family.
