    Stream-enterer

Stream-enterer (Pali: Sotapanna) is the first of the four stages of awakening in Theravada Buddhism.

    Overview

A stream-enterer has entered the “stream” leading to nirvana and will be reborn at most seven more times, never in a lower realm.

    Philosophical Context

The stream-enterer has eliminated the first three fetters: identity view (sakkaya-ditthi), doubt (vicikiccha), and attachment to rites and rituals (silabbata-paramasa).

    Interpretations

Stream-entry is achieved through direct insight into the three characteristics of existence. The stream-enterer is guaranteed eventual liberation.

    Verification Notes

    • First stage of Buddhist awakening
    • Eliminates three lower fetters
    • Maximum seven rebirths remaining
