Srirangapatna
Srirangapatna is a historic island town in Karnataka’s Mandya district, famous for the Ranganathaswamy Temple and its association with Tipu Sultan’s kingdom.
Overview
Srirangapatna is a town situated on an island formed by the Kaveri River and its tributary, the Lokapavani, in Karnataka’s Mandya district, approximately 15 km from Mysore. It is one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage centers in South India, housing the Ranganathaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha (a form of Vishnu). The town is also historically significant as the capital of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom and the site of the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
History and Legend
The Ranganathaswamy Temple dates to the 9th century CE, with contributions from the Ganga, Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties. The deity Ranganatha is believed to have been brought from Sri Lanka by Vibhishana (Ravana’s brother) and installed here. In the 18th century, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan made Srirangapatna their capital, and Tipu Sultan built the Daria Daulat Bagh palace and the Gumbaz (mausoleum). The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799) and Tipu Sultan’s death at the Seringapatam battle took place here.
Architecture and Features
The Ranganathaswamy Temple complex features a towering gopuram (gateway tower) in Dravidian style, multiple prakaras (compound walls), and numerous sub-shrines. The temple tank (Kalyani) is one of the largest in Karnataka. The Daria Daulat Bagh is a stunning palace built by Tipu Sultan in Indo-Sarcenic style with intricate frescoes. The Gumbaz houses the tombs of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and his mother. The Nimishamba Temple, Karanikanma Gate, and the remains of Tipu Sultan’s fortifications are other notable features.
Modern Status
Srirangapatna is a popular day-trip destination from Mysore and Bangalore, attracting pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and tourists. The town is connected by rail and road to major cities. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the historical monuments, and the Karnataka government has developed tourism infrastructure.
