    Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam

The Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam, on the Kaveri island opposite Tiruchirappalli, is the first of the 108 Divya Desams and the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world — the Vatican of Sri Vaishnavism..](/topic/vashnavism)

    Significance

The reclining Ranganatha (Vishnu on Adishesha) is the deity the Alvars sang in the Divya Prabandham; Ramanuja institutionalized the temple’s administration — its festival calendar, the recitation system, the Sri Vaishnava community — making Srirangam the movement’s seat. The temple encloses seven concentric enclosures (prakaras) and twenty-one gopurams, the tallest (the Raja Gopuram, completed 1987) rising 236 feet — the tallest temple tower in Asia.

    History

The shrine’s antiquity is layered (Sangam references in tradition, Chola inscriptions documented); Ramanuja (11th–12th c.) reorganized it; Malik Kafur’s? — the 14th-century invasion looted it; the Nayak period rebuilt and the Vijayanagara-line endowment sustained it; the Raja Gopuram’s completion in 1987 ended a centuries-long incompletion.

    Modern status

Vaikuntha Ekadashi draws hundreds of thousands through the paramapada-vasal; the temple’s inscriptions are a primary archive of South Indian social history.

    Verification notes

    • Divya Desam primacy, Ramanuja’s role, and the enclosure counts are standard; the 1987 gopuram completion is documented.
