So Hum Dhyan (I Am That Meditation)
So Hum Dhyan is a natural mantra meditation practice that uses the sound of the breath as a vehicle for self-realization.
Overview
So Hum (also written So’ham) is considered the most natural mantra because it arises spontaneously with every breath—“So” on the inhale and “Hum” on the exhale. The mantra means “I am That” or “I am the Universal Consciousness,” pointing to the identity of the individual self with the absolute. This meditation practice uses this natural rhythm to guide the practitioner toward self-realization.
Method/Content
The practitioner sits in a comfortable meditative posture with the spine erect and eyes closed. Attention is directed to the natural breath without attempting to control it. With each inhale, the practitioner mentally notes “So” (or “Sa”), and with each exhale, “Ham.” The mantra is synchronized with the breath rhythm, allowing the sound to become increasingly subtle. As practice deepens, the mantra may merge with the breath itself, and the practitioner may experience states of expanded awareness.
Purpose/Benefits
So Hum Dhyan is believed to be one of the simplest and most direct paths to self-realization. It calms the mind, dissolves the ego, and cultivates the awareness of one’s true nature as pure consciousness. The practice reduces stress, improves concentration, and brings profound peace. It is considered suitable for practitioners of all levels and traditions.
