    Sirsasana (Headstand)

Sirsasana is an inversion asana in Hatha Yoga where the body balances on the head.

    Overview

Sirsasana, meaning “head pose,” is a freestanding headstand where the body balances on the crown of the head with minimal hand support. It represents a complete reversal of the body’s relationship to gravity.

    Method/Content

From the supported headstand position, the practitioner gradually reduces reliance on the arms, finding balance primarily on the crown of the head. The legs remain vertical and together. The core and neck muscles engage to maintain stability. This variation requires significant neck strength and balance developed through practice of Salamba Sirsasana.

    Purpose/Benefits

The headstand provides all the benefits of supported headstand including improved circulation and mental clarity. It further develops balance, core strength, and body awareness. The pose is believed to awaken higher energy centers.
