    Shodhana

Shodhana is the Ayurvedic therapeutic approach of purifying the body by eliminating vitiated doshas and accumulated toxins through specialized elimination procedures.

    Overview

Shodhana, meaning “purification” or “cleansing,” is the more intensive of the two primary Ayurvedic treatment strategies. It is indicated when significant Ama accumulation, severe dosha vitiation, or deep-seated disease requires direct elimination rather than mere pacification. Shodhana is considered the definitive treatment for diseases caused by dosha accumulation (Sanchaya), overflow (Prakopa), and systemic spread (Prasara).

    Method/Content

Shodhana is performed through three sequential stages: Poorvakarma (preparatory procedures including Snehana oil saturation and Swedana fomentation), Pradhana Karma (main elimination procedures—the five actions of Panchakarma: Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana), and Paschat Karma (post-procedural restoration including dietary and lifestyle rejuvenation). The specific Shodhana procedure is selected based on the dominant dosha to be eliminated, the affected tissue, and the patient’s constitutional capacity. Pre-procedural assessment ensures the patient can safely undergo elimination.

    Purpose/Benefits

Shodhana provides the most direct and thorough approach to removing deep-seated disease causes that cannot be addressed through Shamana alone. It offers lasting relief for chronic conditions, resets dosha balance at a fundamental level, and when followed by proper Rasayana (rejuvenation), can restore health even in advanced disease states. Shodhana is also indicated as preventive therapy during seasonal transitions to clear accumulated doshas.

    Verification Notes

    • Shodhana procedures are comprehensively described in Charaka Samhita (Kalpa Sthana and Siddhi Sthana)
    • Panchakarma, the principal Shodhana protocol, is recognized by WHO traditional medicine classifications
    • Clinical studies demonstrate measurable toxin elimination and dosha rebalancing through Shodhana
