    Shavasana

Shavasana is a supine relaxation posture, also known as the corpse pose.

    Overview

Shavasana, meaning “corpse posture,” is the final resting posture practiced at the end of an asana session. The body lies flat on the back with limbs relaxed, and the practitioner enters a state of conscious relaxation.

    Method/Content

The practitioner lies flat on the back with the legs slightly apart and the arms resting alongside the body, palms facing upward. The eyes are closed, the jaw is relaxed, and the breath is allowed to flow naturally. The practitioner systematically relaxes each part of the body, releasing tension from the toes to the crown of the head. The posture is held for 5 to 15 minutes.

    Purpose/Benefits

Shavasana allows the body to integrate the benefits of the preceding asana practice. It deeply relaxes the nervous system, reduces blood pressure, and calms the mind. Regular practice of Shavasana is said to relieve stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

    Verification Notes

    • Considered one of the most important and challenging asanas due to the requirement of complete relaxation
    • Should be practiced at the end of every asana session
    • Practicing in a warm, quiet environment enhances the benefits
