Śakti
Śakti (शक्ति) is the primordial creative energy of the universe — the dynamic feminine principle that is the very power of Śiva (the static consciousness). Where Śiva is pure consciousness, Śakti is pure energy in motion. Without Śakti, Śiva is said to be śūnya (empty, inert).
The union of Śiva and Śakti
The Kularṇavatantra repeatedly teaches the non-duality of Śiva and Śakti — Śiva as the consciousness that pervades everything, Śakti as his own power, inseparable from him. This expresses the fundamental unity: Śiva and Śakti are not two but one. The Śiva Sūtras (1.1) states:
चैतन्यं आत्मा
Caitanyaṃ ātmā
“Consciousness is the Self.”
The opening chapters of the Kularṇavatantra praise the Goddess as the cause of all — the mother of the universe, the source of time, space, and causation.
The Goddess as Supreme
In the Devi Bhāgavata Purāṇa (Book 1), the goddess herself declares her supremacy over the entire cosmos — as the one source of all worlds, before whom even the great gods bow.
The Devi Mahātmya (part of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa) presents the goddess as the sole controller — the one who creates, preserves, and dissolves the universe. Durga’s victory over Mahishasura establishes her as the ultimate power (Mahādevī).
Kundalini Śakti
In the subtle body, Śakti is said to reside coiled at the base of the spine as Kundalinī. The Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā (chapter 3) describes her awakening: when she is roused from her place, she rises through the central channel.
This awakened energy rises through the central channel (Sushumna) and the chakras, culminating in union with Śiva at the crown (Sahasrara).
The ten Mahāvidyās
In the Śākta tantric tradition, Śakti manifests as ten Wisdom Mothers (Mahāvidyās), each embodying a different aspect of divine feminine power — from the terrible Kālī to the lotus-goddess Kamalā. These are not separate goddesses but ten forms or aspects of One Goddess.
Śakti in practice
The Śākta path (Śākta sādhanā) works directly with Śakti through:
- Mantra — sacred sound formulas dedicated to specific forms
- Yantra — geometric representations of divine energy
- Puja — worship rituals invoking the goddess
- Dhyāna — meditation on the goddess form
- Japa — repetition of the goddess’s name or mantra
Verification notes
- The Kularṇavatantra verse-range citations were generalized; an unintelligible “1.13” Devanagari quotation and a garbled Devi Bhāgavata Purāṇa quotation were removed and replaced with accurate paraphrases.
- The Devi Bhāgavata Purāṇa (Book 1) and Devi Mahātmya attest the Goddess’s supremacy; the claimed Bhandarkar Oriental Institute critical edition was removed as unverified.
- Kuṇḍalinī material is treated in Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā chapter 3 (the previous “1.72–1.79” range fell outside the chapter’s actual length).
- The ten Mahāvidyās appear in texts such as the Mundamālā and Todala Tantras, with an early list in the Mahābhārata’s Damayantī hymn; the previous listing (Kularṇavatantra, Saundarya Lahari, Varāha Tantra) was corrected, and “Kāmākṣī” (not one of the ten) was replaced with Kamalā.
- Wikipedia ref confirms Śakti as the feminine “Universal Power,” the personified energy of a male deity, and foremost deity of Tantric Shaktism.
