    Samana Vayu

Samana Vayu is the equalizing vital breath in Ayurveda, governing digestion, absorption, and the balanced distribution of nutrients throughout the body.

    Overview

Samana Vayu is located in the navel region and the small intestine. It governs the digestive process, the absorption of nutrients, and the equalization of the other pranas. It is considered the “fire” of digestion that transforms food into usable energy.

    Philosophical Context

Samana Vayu represents the principle of balance and equilibrium in Ayurvedic physiology. Philosophically, it embodies the Middle Way of digestion—neither too much nor too little, but the perfect processing of what is taken in. When balanced, Samana Vayu ensures proper appetite, digestion, absorption, and metabolism. When imbalanced, it manifests as digestive disorders, malabsorption, or metabolic dysfunction.

    Interpretations

Some traditions associate Samana Vayu with the manipura chakra (solar plexus) and the fire element. Others connect it to the navel point and the principle of transformation. The practice of specific breathing techniques, dietary guidelines, and herbal preparations is designed to regulate Samana Vayu. It is considered central to the concept of agni (digestive fire).
