Salamba Sirsasana (Supported Headstand)
Salamba Sirsasana is a supported inversion asana in Hatha Yoga.
Overview
Salamba Sirsasana, meaning “supported head pose,” is a headstand where the forearms and the crown of the head form a triangular base of support. It is called the “king” of yoga poses for its wide-ranging benefits.
Method/Content
The forearms are placed on the floor with fingers interlocked, creating a triangular base. The crown of the head is placed within the cupped hands. The legs are then walked in and lifted to a vertical position. The body forms a straight line from head to heels. The core engages to maintain balance, and the breath remains steady.
Purpose/Benefits
Headstand improves circulation to the brain, strengthens the core and upper body, and stimulates the endocrine system. It is believed to improve concentration, memory, and mental clarity. The pose builds confidence and overcomes fear.
Verification Notes
- The head-posture appears in the Gheranda Samhita (kapālī āsana); the full supported headstand is documented in later manuals such as the 19th-century Śrītattvanidhi.
- Should be practiced with proper instruction and caution
