    Rechaka

Rechaka is the exhalation phase of pranayama in Hatha Yoga.

    Overview

Rechaka refers to the controlled, deliberate exhalation of breath during pranayama practice. It is one of the three fundamental components of pranayama alongside puraka (inhalation) and kumbhaka (retention).

    Method/Content

In rechaka, the breath is exhaled slowly, smoothly, and completely through the nostrils. The exhalation is typically twice the duration of inhalation in basic pranayama ratios. The abdominal muscles engage gently to expel all air from the lungs. The practice requires control to maintain an even, steady stream of breath without force or strain.

    Purpose/Benefits

Proper rechaka purifies the body by expelling stale air and toxins. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting calm and relaxation. A controlled exhalation also prepares the body for effective kumbhaka and deeper states of meditation.

    Verification Notes

    • Discussed in Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita
    • The ratio of rechaka to puraka is fundamental to all pranayama practice
    • Should be practiced with awareness and without strain
