    Rasāyana

Rasāyana is the branch of Ayurveda dedicated to rejuvenation therapy, aimed at revitalising bodily tissues, enhancing immunity, and promoting longevity. The term derives from rasa (tissue plasma) and ayana (pathway), signifying the channelisation of nourishment to bodily tissues for restoration and enhancement.

    Origins

Rasāyana therapy is extensively described in the Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana), which devotes an entire chapter to Rasāyana Kalpa. The concept is linked to Ayurvedic theories of saptadhatu (seven tissues) and agni (metabolic fire). Classical texts classify rasāyana into categories such as Kamya rasāyana (for specific goals such as longevity, intellect, or vitality), Naimittika rasāyana (taken to counter specific diseases), and Ajasrika rasāyana (used as daily nourishment), and describe specific rasāyana drugs and protocols, including the renowned Chyawanprash, which is attributed to the sage Chyawana.

    Methodology

Rasāyana therapy involves the use of specific herbs, minerals, and formulations administered through particular protocols. Related categories include Vajikarana rasāyana (for sexual vitality). Treatment considers the individual’s constitution, season, and post-Panchakarma status. Common rasāyana drugs include Amalaki, Guduchi, Haritaki, and Ashwagandha.

    Claims

Practitioners claim Rasāyana enhances tissue nutrition, improves immunity (ojas), delays aging, increases lifespan, and improves physical and mental capabilities. Specific claims include improved memory, enhanced skin quality, stronger bones, and better reproductive health.

    Modern status

Rasāyana herbs have been extensively studied in modern pharmacological research. Ashwagandha, Amalaki, and Guduchi have demonstrated adaptogenic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties in preclinical and clinical studies. The rasāyana concept is integrated into Indian wellness and pharmaceutical industries.

    Verification notes

Several rasāyana herbs have demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials, particularly for adaptogenic and antioxidant effects. However, many traditional claims about tissue-specific rejuvenation lack rigorous validation. The systemic claims of longevity enhancement require long-term studies that are difficult to conduct. Vidyākośa marks rasāyana as mixed, recognising evidence for specific herbs while noting that broader rejuvenation claims require further investigation.
