    Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissue)

Rakta Dhatu is the second of the seven bodily tissues in Ayurveda, representing blood and the oxygen-carrying capacity of the body.

    Overview

Rakta Dhatu corresponds to blood and is responsible for nourishing all tissues, carrying oxygen and nutrients, and maintaining life. It is derived from the metabolism of rasa (plasma) and is considered the life-sustaining tissue—without which no other tissue can survive.

    Philosophical Context

Rakta Dhatu represents the principle of life force and vitality in Ayurvedic physiology. Philosophically, it embodies the idea that life depends on the continuous flow of nourishment and energy. When balanced, rakta provides vibrant health, clear complexion, and strong immunity. When imbalanced, it manifests as blood disorders, skin diseases, inflammation, or anemia. The liver is considered the seat of rakta in Ayurveda.

    Interpretations

Some traditions connect rakta with the pitta dosha, as excess pitta can aggravate blood tissue. Others emphasize its role in the three-dosha system and its importance for all three constitutions. The maintenance of rakta through proper diet, detoxification, and herbal support is central to Ayurvedic hematology and skin health. Blood purification therapies are among the most common Ayurvedic treatments.
