Pratyekabuddha
Pratyekabuddha (Pali: Paccekabuddha) refers to a solitary Buddha who achieves enlightenment independently without teaching others.
Overview
Pratyekabuddhas realize the truths of dependent origination and achieve nirvana, but do not establish a sangha or teach the dharma to others.
Philosophical Context
In Mahayana Buddhism, pratyekabuddhas are seen as having less merit than bodhisattvas because they do not actively help others achieve liberation. They are associated with periods when the dharma is absent.
Interpretations
Pratyekabuddhas appear in world-systems without a Buddha. They are sometimes called “solitary realizers” and represent a middle path between shravakas and bodhisattvas.
