Prapañcāsāra Tantra
The Prapañcāsāra Tantra is a Shakta Tantric text whose name means “the essence of the universe.” It is a major source for the worship of the Goddess in her various forms, particularly Lalitā and the Śrī Vidyā tradition.
Overview
The text consists of 23 chapters and provides detailed instructions for the worship of the Goddess through mantras, maṇḍalas, and rituals. It is one of the most important Tantric texts for the Śrī Vidyā tradition and preserves the famous Lalitā Sahasranāma (thousand names of the Goddess).
Content and Structure
The Prapañcāsāra Tantra describes the cosmology of the Goddess, her emanation as the universe, and the practices by which the worshipper can attain union with her. It includes chapters on the fivefold worship (pañcāvara pūjā), the formation of the Śrī Cakra maṇḍala, and the recitation of the Goddess’s thousand names. The text also contains mantras, dhāraṇās (meditation formulas), and instructions for initiations.
Significance
The text is significant for its systematic presentation of Śrī Vidyā theology and practice. It became the foundational text for the Śrī Vidyā tradition and influenced the development of Goddess worship throughout India. The Lalitā Sahasranāma preserved in this text is one of the most widely recited hymns in Hindu worship.
