    Prakriti

Prakriti is the Ayurvedic term for an individual’s innate constitution or biological nature, determined at the moment of conception.

    Overview

Prakriti represents the unique ratio of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha present at conception, forming the baseline from which all health assessments are made. It is considered fixed for life and determines physical build, metabolic tendencies, mental disposition, and disease susceptibility. No two individuals share the exact same Prakriti, making it the Ayurvedic equivalent of a biological fingerprint.

    Method/Content

Prakriti is assessed through pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha), examination of physical features, tongue and eye inspection, voice quality, body build, skin texture, and behavioral patterns. The assessment considers structural elements (Anatmya), functional tendencies (Kriya), and mental qualities (Manas). A person may have single-dominant Prakriti (e.g., predominantly Vata) or dual-dominant (e.g., Pitta-Kapha), with the three-dosha combination being rare. Modern research correlates Prakriti types with distinct genetic and genomic profiles.

    Purpose/Benefits

Prakriti identification enables truly personalized medicine—treatments, diets, and routines are tailored to the individual’s constitutional type rather than to the disease alone. It helps predict vulnerability to specific diseases and guides preventive strategies. Prakriti-based assessment is used in Ayurvedic research to stratify study participants and predict treatment responses.

    Verification Notes

    • Described extensively in Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 12 and 26
    • Modern genomic studies have identified distinct gene expression patterns for different Prakriti types
    • International consortium has standardized Prakriti assessment tools
