Peacock Pose (Mayurasana)
Mayurasana is an arm balance asana in Hatha Yoga resembling a peacock.
Overview
Mayurasana, meaning “peacock pose,” is an arm balance where the body is held horizontal to the floor, supported only by the hands with the elbows pressing into the abdomen. It is a classical Hatha Yoga posture.
Method/Content
From a kneeling position, the hands are placed on the floor with fingers pointing backward. The elbows bend and press into the abdomen, supporting the body weight. The legs are then extended straight back, lifting the entire body horizontal to the floor. The gaze is forward and the body remains straight from head to heels.
Purpose/Benefits
Mayurasana strengthens the arms, wrists, and core while toning the abdominal organs. It is believed to improve digestion and eliminate toxins from the body. The pose develops concentration and determination.
