    Parpam

Parpam is a class of calcined mineral preparations in Siddha medicine, created by repeated heating and cooling cycles of mineral ingredients in sealed containers.

    Overview

Parpam preparations represent one of the most refined categories of Siddha mineral medicines, involving a specific calcination technique where ingredients are heated in a sealed clay container (Sarava Samputa) and cooled repeatedly for a specified number of cycles. The word “Parpam” derives from the Sanskrit “Parpati,” referring to the plate-like flakes that form during the process. These preparations are prized for their purity, potency, and therapeutic versatility.

    Method/Content

The Parpam process involves placing purified mineral ingredients in a clay dish, sealing it with another inverted dish, and coating the joint with clay paste. The sealed container is heated over a controlled fire for a specific duration, then allowed to cool completely. This heating-cooling cycle is repeated for a prescribed number of times (often 18 or 32 cycles), after which the container is opened and the resulting brittle, flaky mass is collected and powdered. The number of cycles, temperature, and duration are precisely controlled to achieve desired chemical transformations. Common Parpam preparations include Swarna Parpam (gold), Rajata Parpam (silver), and Vanga Parpam (tin).

    Purpose/Benefits

Parpam preparations offer enhanced bioavailability of mineral nutrients due to their fine particle size and altered chemical state resulting from repeated thermal processing. They are used for treating diseases of the nervous system, metabolic disorders, and conditions requiring deep mineral supplementation. The controlled calcination process ensures safety while preserving therapeutic mineral content, making Parpam a sophisticated pharmaceutical technology.
