    Pandharpur

Pandharpur (पंढरपूर) is a town in Maharashtra famous for the Vithoba Temple, the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage site in Maharashtra.

    Overview

Pandharpur is a town on the banks of the Bhima River in Solapur district, Maharashtra. It is home to the Vithoba Temple, dedicated to Lord Vithoba (a form of Vishnu/Krishna). The temple is the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage site in Maharashtra and attracts millions of devotees, especially during the Ashadi Ekadashi festival.

    History and Legend

According to legend, Pundalik, a devoted son, was visited by Lord Krishna. When Pundalik was attending to his parents, he threw a brick for Krishna to stand on. Krishna stood on the brick and became Vithoba (one who stood on a brick). The temple was established at this spot. The Warkari tradition of devotion to Vithoba originated here.

    Architecture and Features

The Vithoba Temple has a Dravidian-style gopuram and a sanctum with the black stone idol of Vithoba standing on a brick, with Rukmini beside him. The temple complex includes the Pandurang Math and various other shrines. The Warkari tradition involves singing abhangs (devotional poetry) and carrying palanquins.

    Modern Status

Pandharpur is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. The Ashadi Ekadashi festival attracts over a million Warkari pilgrims who walk from across Maharashtra. The temple is managed by the Shri Vithoba Temple Trust and attracts devotees throughout the year.
