    Once-returner

Once-returner (Pali: Sakadagami) is the second of the four stages of awakening in Theravada Buddhism.

    Overview

A once-returner will be reborn in the human realm at most one more time before attaining final nirvana.

    Philosophical Context

The once-returner has weakened (but not eliminated) the fourth and fifth fetters: sensual desire (kamaraga) and ill-will (vyapada). They are on the verge of complete liberation.

    Interpretations

The once-returner has a clearer understanding of the dharma than the stream-enterer and is closer to final liberation. Their remaining defilements are significantly reduced.

    Verification Notes

    • Second stage of Buddhist awakening
    • At most one more human rebirth
    • Weakened sensual desire and ill-will
