Numerology
Indian numerology, known as Aṅkavidyā or Aṅka Jyotiṣa, assigns mystical and predictive significance to numbers, operating on the principle that numerical values underlie all cosmic phenomena. The system draws from Vedic mathematics and Tantric letter-number correspondences (Kaṭapayādi system), where each Sanskrit syllable carries a specific numerical value.
The practice integrates with Jyotiṣa through the Pañcāṅga and with Tantra through maṇtra numeration. Different regional traditions assign distinct meanings—Tamil numerology and Sanskrit-based systems sometimes produce divergent interpretations for the same number.
Origins
Numerical symbolism pervades Vedic literature, with the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa discussing sacred numbers in ritual contexts. The systematization of personal numerology drew from Tantric traditions of letter-number grids, particularly the Kubera Koṣa and related manuals that map the alphabet onto numerical matrices.
Practice/Methodology
Practitioners reduce names and birth dates to single or compound numbers using specific calculation systems, then interpret these through established tables. The Life Path number (derived from birth date), Name number (from alphabetic values), and Soul number constitute primary analytical tools. Each number from 1-9 carries archetypal associations with planetary energies.
Modern status
Numerology consultancies operate widely in Indian cities, often integrated with astrology services. Online calculators have democratized basic analysis, though practitioners emphasize that accurate interpretation requires traditional training. The practice lacks scientific validation but maintains cultural relevance.
Verification notes
No controlled studies support numerological predictions. The mathematical foundations are sound—numerical analysis of language patterns is a legitimate computational linguistics method—but the metaphysical claims about number-personality correspondences remain unverified.
