    Navagraha Sthala

Navagraha Sthala (नवग्रह स्थल) is a pilgrimage circuit of nine temples dedicated to the nine celestial bodies (grahas) in Tamil Nadu.

    Overview

The Navagraha Sthalas are nine temples located around Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, each dedicated to one of the nine celestial bodies: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu. The pilgrimage is believed to mitigate the adverse effects of planetary positions in one’s horoscope.

    History and Legend

According to legend, the Navagrahas (nine planets) were cursed by Shiva and bound to Earth. Each graha established a temple at a specific location around Kumbakonam. The temples are: Suryanar (Sun), Thingaloor (Moon), Vaitheeswaran Koil (Mars), Thiruvenkadu’s Swetharanyeswarar (Mercury), Alangudi (Jupiter), Kanjanur (Venus), Thirunallar (Saturn), Thirunageswaram (Rahu), and Keezhperumpallam (Ketu).

    Architecture and Features

Each temple has distinct architectural features reflecting its planetary association. The Suryanar temple has a golden chariot, while the Vaitheeswaran Koil has a medicinal spring believed to cure diseases. The temples range from small shrines to large complexes with impressive gopurams.

    Modern Status

The Navagraha Sthala pilgrimage is extremely popular in Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims visit all nine temples to mitigate planetary doshas. The temples are well-maintained with regular rituals conducted according to planetary positions. The circuit attracts thousands of devotees monthly.
