The Nārāyaṇa Upaniṣad is a Vaiṣṇava Upaniṣad that identifies Nārāyaṇa (Vishnu) with Brahman and describes him as the supreme reality underlying all existence.
Overview
The text is brief, consisting of a series of declarations establishing the identity of Nārāyaṇa with the highest Brahman. It is attached to the Atharvaveda and forms part of the Vaiṣṇava group of minor Upaniṣads. The text is sometimes grouped with the Nārāyaṇa-related Upaniṣads such as the Ekāyanabihita and Puruṣa Upaniṣads.
Content and Structure
The Nārāyaṇa Upaniṣad declares that Nārāyaṇa is the source of all creation, the sustainer of the universe, and its ultimate dissolver. It identifies Nārāyaṇa with the ātman, Brahman, and the cosmic order (ṛta). The text provides a concise Vedāntic theology centered on the personal God as the absolute.
Significance
The text is significant for the development of Vaiṣṇava theology, providing scriptural authority for the identification of Vishnu with the Upanishadic Brahman. It has been commentated upon by Vaiṣṇava ācāryas and remains important in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition.
