Narasimha Kavacham (Protection Armor of Lord Narasimha)
Narasimha Kavacham is the devotional practice of reciting the protective hymn dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the half-lion half-human avatar of Vishnu.
Overview
Narasimha Kavacham is a protective hymn (kavacham means armor) that describes the various body parts of Lord Narasimha and invokes his protection. Found in the Brahmanda Purana, this text is recited for protection from enemies, fear, black magic, and all forms of danger. Lord Narasimha is considered the most fierce protector among Vishnu’s avatars.
Method/Content
The text consists of verses that invoke protection from Narasimha’s various body parts—his mane, face, eyes, ears, teeth, claws, and belly. The recitation is performed with faith and devotion, ideally during Rahu Kalam (inauspicious time), on Saturdays, or when facing danger. The practitioner recites the complete text (approximately 10-15 minutes) while visualizing Narasimha’s fierce form as a protective shield. Traditional practice includes offering yellow flowers, turmeric, and ghee lamps.
Purpose/Benefits
Reciting Narasimha Kavacham is believed to provide impenetrable protection from all forms of danger—physical, mental, and spiritual. It is said to remove black magic, ward off evil spirits, protect from enemies, and grant courage in the face of adversity. The practice is considered especially powerful for those facing threats or difficult circumstances.
