    Nakṣatra

Nakṣatras are the 27 (or 28, including Abhijit) lunar mansions of Hindu astrology, each occupying 13°20’ of the ecliptic along the Moon’s orbital path. More than mere astronomical markers, Nakṣatras constitute an elaborate system of personality typing, timing, and mythological symbolism that integrates astronomical observation with Vedic cosmology.

Each Nakṣatra is presided over by a specific deity and possesses a unique combination of attributes including deity, symbol, element, gana (temperament class), and yoni (animal emblem). The Moon’s Nakṣatra at birth (Janma Nakṣatra) forms a foundational element of Jyotiṣa analysis, determining favorable and unfavorable planetary periods through the daśā system.

    Origins

The Nakṣatra system appears in the earliest Vedic Saṃhitās—the Taittirīya Saṃhitā lists the 27 Nakṣatras, and the Ṛgveda references specific lunar mansions. The system likely predates Vedic literature, reflecting pre-Vedic astronomical observation. The Bṛhat Parāśara Horāśāstra systematized Nakṣatra interpretation for astrological purposes.

    Practice/Methodology

Jyotiṣa practitioners analyze the Janma Nakṣatra’s pada (quarter), its ruling planet, and relationships with other chart factors. Timing applications use Nakṣatras for determining auspicious dates (muhūrta) and interpreting planetary periods (daśā). Each Nakṣatra carries specific vocational, temperamental, and relational indications.

    Modern status

Nakṣatra knowledge remains integral to Jyotiṣa practice and is transmitted through traditional schools. Popular interest in Nakṣatras has grown through accessible books and online resources. The system provides a more nuanced personality framework than the 12-sign Western system and maintains cultural authority in South Asian communities.

    Verification notes

Nakṣatras accurately track the Moon’s position against background stars, demonstrating genuine astronomical observation. Personality-typing and predictive claims lack empirical validation, though the astronomical framework is sound even if its metaphysical extensions are not.
