Nadi Dharana (Energy Channel Concentration)
Nadi Dharana is a meditation practice of concentrating awareness on the nadis (subtle energy channels) within the body.
Overview
Nadi Dharana involves directing and maintaining awareness on the nadis—the subtle energy channels through which prana (life force) flows. The three primary nadis are ida (left/lunar), pingala (right/solar), and sushumna (central). This practice is a prerequisite for advanced pranayama and kundalini awakening, as it develops the ability to perceive and work with subtle energy.
Method/Content
The practitioner sits in a meditative posture and begins with nadi shodhanaa](/entry/shodhana) pranayama to balance the energy flow. As awareness of the breath becomes refined, the practitioner begins to feel the subtle sensations of energy flowing through the nadis—typically experienced as tingling, warmth, or-like sensations. The practice then involves directing awareness along the sushumna nadi from the base of the spine to the crown, and back again. Advanced practitioners may work with specific nadi junctions (marma points) and chakras.
Purpose/Benefits
Nadi Dharana purifies the energy channels, balances the ida and pingala nadis, and prepares the sushumna for kundalini awakening. It develops subtle body awareness, enhances pranic sensitivity, and strengthens the ability to work with energy. The practice is believed to promote physical healing, emotional balance, and spiritual awakening.
