    Murugan/Kartikeya

Murugan is the Hindu god of war, victory, and youthful energy, also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, and Subramanya.

    Overview

Murugan is the son of Shiva and Parvati, born to destroy the demon Tarakasura. He is the commander of the divine armies and the god of war, courage, and spiritual victory. He is particularly revered in South India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia, where he is known as Murugan, Subramanya, or Skanda.

    Method/Content

Murugan worship involves offerings of peacock feathers, flowers, and specific mantras. The Thiruppugazh and Skanda Shashti Kavacham are key devotional texts. Rituals include abhisheka, the waving of lights, and the performance of Kavadi (a form of devotion involving carrying offerings on a pole). The six-day Skanda Shashti festival commemorates his victory over demon Surapadman.

    Purpose/Benefits

Murugan worship is believed to grant courage, victory over enemies, and spiritual progress. He is invoked for success in battle, protection from negative forces, and the attainment of wisdom. The tradition holds that his grace bestows both worldly success and liberation.
