    Murudeshwar

Murudeshwar is a coastal town in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, famous for its colossal Shiva statue and the Murudeshwar Temple on the Arabian Sea coast.

    Overview

Murudeshwar is a small coastal town on the Arabian Sea coast in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, approximately 16 km from Bhatkal. It is famous for its 123-foot-tall Shiva statue, the second tallest Shiva statue in the world, and the Murudeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The town is located on a peninsula surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, providing a dramatic setting for the temple and statue.

    History and Legend

Murudeshwar is identified with the ancient temple town mentioned in the Shiva Purana as the place where Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, worshipped Lord Shiva to obtain the Atma Linga (soul of Shiva). According to legend, Ravana performed intense penance here, and Shiva was pleased but tricked by the gods into giving the Atma Linga to Ganesha. The Murudeshwar Temple has been a center of Shaiva worship for centuries, with contributions from various dynasties including the Vijayanagara and Kadamba rulers.

    Architecture and Features

The Murudeshwar Temple complex is dominated by the 123-foot-tall Shiva statue, which stands on a 60-foot-tall platform and is visible from miles away. The temple itself features a 20-story Raja Gopuram, a gold-plated sanctum, and a large courtyard facing the Arabian Sea. The statue depicts Shiva in a seated posture with the damaru (drum) and trishul (trident). The Raja Gopuram is one of the tallest gopurams in Asia. The surrounding coastal area includes the Bhatkal beach and the historic Bhatkal port.

    Modern Status

Murudeshwar has become a major tourist and pilgrimage destination since the construction of the Shiva statue in 2006. The statue was built by R.N. Shetty and is the world’s second tallest Shiva statue. The town receives lakhs of visitors annually, with peaks during Maha Shivaratri and other Hindu festivals. The Murudeshwar Hotels and Resorts complex provides modern accommodation facilities, and the town is accessible by road from Bhatkal and Mangalore.
