Mookambika Temple
Mookambika Temple (मूकाम्बिका मंदिर) is a Shakti Peetha in Kollur, Karnataka.
Overview
The Mookambika Temple at Kollur in the foothills of the Western Ghats (near the Kodachadri peak) in Karnataka enshrines the goddess Mookambika, a combined form of Shakti, Saraswati, and Parvati. It is one of the most important Devi temples of South India and a major pilgrimage centre for Saraswati worship.
History and Legend
According to tradition, the goddess slew the demon Mookasura here, taking the name Mookambika. The temple is closely associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have installed the Sri Chakra before the deity. The temple received patronage from later regional dynasties including the Keladi Nayakas.
Architecture and Features
The temple features a composite deity combining Shakti (as Mookambika) with a Chakra and trishula, representing both Shakti and Saraswati. The temple is set in the lush Western Ghats near the Kodachadri peak. The sanctum has a golden-roofed vimana.
Modern Status
The temple is managed by the Mookambika Temple Administration under the Karnataka government. It is one of Karnataka’s most visited temples and a major centre of the Saraswati Vidya Pratishthanam educational initiative.
