    Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM)

The Mata Amritanandamayi Math is the ashram-charitable complex founded around Mata Amritanandamayi (“Amma,” b. 1953) in her Kerala birth-village (1981) — the global “hugging saint” organization combining darshan, humanitarian relief, and education.

    Overview

Sudhamani (Mata Amritanandamayi) began giving darshan and hugs in her fishing village of Parayakadavu (now Amritapuri) in the 1970s; the Math (1981) grew into a global mission — the Amritapuri ashram (housing thousands of residents and visitors) and the Amrita institutions (the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham university, hospitals, and research centers).

    Core teachings

Compassion (karuna) as the path — “the mother’s embrace” as darshan; the unity of service and spirituality (Amma’s “compassion to the poor is our worship of God”); interfaith universalism; the bhakti-advaita blend of her songs (she composes in Malayalam and other languages).

    Practice and work

Amma’s world tours (the darshan programs where millions have received her embrace); the Embracing the World network (disaster relief — the 2004 tsunami response’s flagship scale, scholarships, housing for the poor, hospitals); Amrita University’s research (including AI and biomedical programs).

    Modern status

One of India’s largest humanitarian NGOs; Amma continues her darshan schedule; the organization’s scale (UN consultative status) and its institutions make it a distinctive modern ashram-university hybrid.

    Verification notes

    • Founding (1981) and the institutional history are documented; the darshan practice is the movement’s documented core.
