Marichyasana (Sage Marichi’s Pose)
Marichyasana is a group of seated asanas in Hatha Yoga named after the sage Marichi.
Overview
Marichyasana comprises several variations (I through IV) involving seated twists and forward folds with a bind around the leg. The poses are named after Marichi, one of the seven great sages (Saptarishi) in Hindu tradition.
Method/Content
In Marichyasana A, one leg is extended while the other is bent with the foot flat on the floor; the arm wraps around the bent knee and clasps behind the back. Marichyasana B adds a half-lotus position. Variations C and D involve spinal twists with the bind. The practitioner folds or twists while maintaining a straight spine and steady breath.
Purpose/Benefits
Marichyasana stretches the shoulders, spine, and hips while improving spinal mobility. The twists stimulate abdominal organs and aid digestion. The bind component develops shoulder flexibility and opening.
