    Mahur Shakti Peetha

Mahur (also known as Mahurgad), in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, is a Shakti Peetha where Sati’s cheeks are said to have fallen. The site is associated with the Renuka Devi temple, one of the most important Shakta shrines in the Marathwada region.

    Background

Mahur is a historic fort town with a temple complex dedicated to Renuka Devi, the mother of the sage Parashurama. The temple is situated atop a hill within the fortification, and the site has been a place of worship for centuries. The mythology of Renuka Devi, including her story of devotion and transformation, is deeply embedded in Maharashtrian folk tradition.

    Shakti Peetha significance

According to the Shakti Peetha lists, the cheeks of Sati fell at Mahur. The identification of this site as a Shakti Peetha connects it to the broader tradition of goddess worship across the Indian subcontinent. The site’s association with Renuka Devi, a mother goddess figure, adds a layer of maternal devotion to the Shakti Peetha tradition.

    Associated deity

The presiding deity is Renuka Devi, the mother of Parashurama, worshipped here as a form of the Divine Mother. The temple’s traditions emphasise the goddess’s maternal aspect and her role as the protector of the family and community.

    Present day

The Renuka Devi Temple at Mahur is a significant pilgrimage destination in the Marathwada region. The temple receives large numbers of devotees, particularly during the Navaratri festival and on auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The hilltop setting and the fortification add to the site’s dramatic character.
