    Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad

The Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad is a collection of Vedic mantras and hymns appended to the Taittirīya Āraṇyaka of the Black Yajurveda. It is devoted primarily to Nārāyaṇa (Vishnu) and contains mantras used in daily worship and funeral rites.

    Overview

The text comprises a compilation of 84 sections (anuvākas) that draw from the Yajurveda and include well-known prayers such as the Puruṣa Sūkta, the Śānti Mantras, and the famous “Asato Mā Sadgamaya” prayer. It serves as a liturgical handbook for Vaiṣṇava rituals and is widely recited in South Indian Vedic traditions.

    Content and Structure

The Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad includes mantras for various occasions: daily recitation (sandhyā), consecration ceremonies, and eschatological rites. It contains the famous Dhyāna Ślokas (meditation verses) on Vishnu, as well as cosmological hymns describing the creation and dissolution of the universe. The text also preserves important Mantra Pushpam and other liturgical pieces.

    Significance

This Upaniṣad is central to the Śrī Vaiṣṇava and other South Indian Vedic traditions. It has been used continuously for centuries in temple rituals and domestic ceremonies. Its compilation preserves mantras that might otherwise have been lost from the Yajurvedic tradition.
