    Overview

The Lingaraj Temple is the oldest and largest temple in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the 11th century, it is the most prominent example of Kalinga architecture. The temple is considered the fulcrum of religious activity in Bhubaneswar and is one of the most important Shaivite shrines in eastern India.

    History and Legend

According to tradition, the Lingaraj Temple was built by King Jajati Keshari of the Somavamshi dynasty in the 11th century. The temple was originally named Harihara and later became known as Lingaraj. The temple marks the spot where Shiva and Parvati are believed to have resided. The Bindusagar Lake near the temple was created by Shiva’s tears.

    Architecture and Features

The Lingaraj Temple features a towering rekha deul (curvilinear tower) rising 55 meters, the tallest in Bhubaneswar. The sanctum contains a massive lingam of Harihara (half-Shiva, half-Vishnu). The temple complex includes smaller shrines, a sacred pool, and intricately carved walls. The architecture is characteristic of the Kalinga style.

    Modern Status
