    Kuzhambu

Kuzhambu refers to medicated oil-based preparations in Siddha medicine/siddha) medicine, where herbal or mineral ingredients are processed in oil or ghee bases for therapeutic application.

    Overview

Kuzhambu preparations utilize sesame oil, coconut oil, or ghee as vehicles for delivering herbal and mineral medicines both internally and externally. The term covers medicated oils used for external application (such as massage oils), internal consumption (medicated ghees), and preparations that combine oil bases with herbal pastes. Kuzhambu is a versatile dosage form in Siddha medicine, valued for its ability to enhance the absorption and bioavailability of fat-soluble therapeutic compounds.

    Method/Content

Kuzhambu preparation involves decocting herbal ingredients in water until the water content is reduced to a specific fraction, then adding oil or ghee and continuing to cook until all water evaporates. The resulting medicated oil is filtered, cooled, and stored in appropriate containers. The ratio of herbal decoction to oil, cooking temperature, and duration are precisely controlled to ensure optimal extraction of active compounds. Different Kuzhambu formulations target specific conditions—some for external application in paralysis and joint disorders, others for internal consumption in digestive and neurological conditions.

    Purpose/Benefits

Oil-based preparations enhance the penetration of therapeutic compounds through skin and mucous membranes, making Kuzhambu ideal for both external therapies and conditions requiring deep tissue delivery. Fat-soluble medicines are better absorbed in lipid-based vehicles, improving their therapeutic efficacy. Kuzhambu preparations also serve as nourishing carriers that protect the GI tract from harsh mineral or herbal compounds during internal administration.
