Kurukshetra
Kurukshetra is a historically and mythologically significant city in Haryana, renowned as the battlefield of the Mahabharata and a major center of Vedic learning and pilgrimage.
Overview
Kurukshetra is a plain in the state of Haryana, approximately 170 km from Delhi, that stretches across a vast area between the Ghaggar and Saraswati rivers. It is most famous as the battlefield where the Mahabharata war was fought between the Pandavas and Kauravas, and where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. The region is described in tradition as a land of great sanctity (“Kurukshetra karma-kshetra”) and hosts numerous sacred tanks, temples, and learning centers.
History and Legend
Kurukshetra derives its name from King Kuru, ancestor of both the Pandavas and Kauravas. According to the Mahabharata, the 18-day war was fought on this plain approximately 3,100 BCE (according to tradition). The Bhagavad Gita, the 700-verse philosophical dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, was delivered on this battlefield before the war commenced. The Mahabharata describes Kurukshetra as a place of great sanctity where performing Shraddha (ancestral rites) grants liberation. Historical references in the Puranas, Mahabharata, and Vedic texts confirm the region’s ancient significance.
Architecture and Features
Major sites include the Brahma Sarovar (sacred tank where Brahma is believed to have performed creation), Thanesar (an ancient city with temples and historical remains), Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple (where the Pandavas worshipped Shiva before the war), and the Bhagavad Gita Statue Park. The Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Centre presents the Mahabharata war through a 360-degree panoramic display. The Dharohar museum showcases the cultural heritage of Haryana. Numerous Ashrams and Vedic learning centers operate in the region.
Modern Status
Kurukshetra is a major pilgrimage destination, especially during Solar Eclipse gatherings (Kurukshetra Teerth) when millions bathe in the Brahma Sarovar. The city is administered as a municipal council and is the headquarters of the Kurukshetra district. The Kurukshetra University, established in 1956, is an important center for Sanskrit and Vedic studies. The annual Gita Jayanti celebrations in December attract scholars and devotees from across India.
