King Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana is a deep hip opener and backbend in Hatha Yoga.

    Overview

King Pigeon Pose, meaning “one-legged king pigeon pose,” is an advanced posture that combines deep hip opening with a backbend. It is one of the most comprehensive hip-opening poses in yoga.

    Method/Content

From a seated position, one leg is bent forward with the shin parallel to the front of the mat, while the other leg extends straight back. The back leg bends at the knee, and the foot reaches toward the head. The torso lifts and arches back, and the hands may reach overhead to grasp the back foot. The pose creates a deep opening in the front hip and thigh.

    Purpose/Benefits

King Pigeon deeply opens the hips, hip flexors, and quadriceps while stretching the chest and shoulders. It improves posture and spinal flexibility. The pose is believed to release stored emotions in the hips.
