    Kevala Kumbhaka

Kevala Kumbhaka is the spontaneous and effortless suspension of breath in advanced pranayama.

    Overview

Kevala Kumbhaka is the highest form of kumbhaka, where the breath suspends spontaneously without deliberate effort. It is not a technique to be forced but rather a state that arises naturally from sustained and correct pranayama practice.

    Method/Content

In kevala kumbhaka, the breath simply stops — neither inhalation nor exhalation occurs. The practitioner does not actively hold the breath; instead, the suspension arises on its own. This may occur briefly during deep meditation or advanced pranayama. The practitioner remains in a state of awareness without attempting to control or prolong the suspension.

    Purpose/Benefits

Kevala kumbhaka is said to lead directly to nirodha (cessation of mental fluctuations) and samadhi. It represents the culmination of pranayama practice and is described in classical texts as the gateway to liberation. During kevala kumbhaka, all nadis are purified simultaneously.

    Verification Notes

    • Described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Chapter 2, verse 72
    • Considered a siddhi (accomplishment) of pranayama
    • Cannot be achieved through force — it arises from dedicated practice over time
