Kaivalyadhama
Kaivalyadhama (the Kaivalyadhama G.S. Institute of Yoga, Lonavala) is the oldest scientific yoga research institute in India — founded by Swami Kuvalayananda in 1924 to study yoga’s practices in the laboratory and teach them in integrated teacher-training.
Overview
Kuvalayananda’s twin conviction — yoga must be practiced seriously and examined scientifically — produced the institute’s journal Yoga Mimamsa (from 1924, the first peer-reviewed yoga research periodical), the college of yoga, and the hospital wing applying yogic therapy.
Core teachings
Classical hatha-yoga (asana, pranayama, shatkarma) in its textual tradition, taught with physiological analysis; Kuvalayananda’s studies of kapalabhati, uddiyana, and mula bandha documented their mechanical and circulatory effects decades before the modern wave.
Practice and work
Diploma and degree programs (affiliated for its yoga college); therapeutic departments; the textual research department (critical editions of hatha texts — the Gheranda Samhita and Hathapradipika studies); government partnerships (Kaivalyadhama advised national yoga standards).
Modern status
Continues at Lonavala with campuses and collaborations; its journal and archives are foundational to yoga-science history.
