Kabir Chaura Matha
The Kabir Chaura Matha at Varanasi is the principal seat of the Kabir Panth — the matha at the site of Kabir’s dwelling, seat of his lineage’s teaching and the Panth’s guru-succession.
Overview
The Chaura (the “field”) marks Kabir’s own place at Varanasi’s Lahartara; the matha developed as the Panth’s Varanasi seat, with the Maghar shrine (Kabir’s samadhi-flower site) as its counterpart; the matha’s mahants carry the Panth’s succession (the Surat Gopal? — the lineage-lists vary by branch, as the Panth’s histories record).
Core teachings
Kabir’s bani as the scripture (the Bijak’s verses among the collections); the formless Ram (the inner Lord); rejection of caste and communal ritual; the shabda-sadhana (the Name’s practice).
Practice and work
Satsang and the singing of Kabir’s pads; the matha’s school and library; the annual Kabir festivals (the Maghar mela’s orbit); stewardship of the Panth’s manuscripts.
Modern status
An active matha and pilgrimage; Kabir’s global renaissance (the folk-singing revival, the scholarship) flows through these seats.
