    Jyotiṣa

Jyotiṣa, the traditional Hindu system of astrology and astronomy, represents one of the six Vedāṅgas—auxiliary disciplines supporting Vedic study. Unlike Western astrology, Jyotiṣa operates on the sidereal zodiac, tracking the actual astronomical positions of celestial bodies rather than seasonal approximations. The system encompasses three primary branches (skandhas): Siddhānta (mathematical astronomy), Saṃhitā (mundane astrology), and Horā (natal and horary astrology).

The foundational texts include the Bṛhat Parāśara Horāśāstra, attributed to sage Parāśara, and the Sūryasiddhānta, a mathematical treatise on planetary motion. These works establish the framework for chart calculation, planetary periods (daśā), and predictive techniques that remain in active use across South Asia.

    Origins

Jyotiṣa derives its theoretical basis from Vedic hymns, particularly the Sūkta of the Vedas, though systematic textual tradition begins with the Siddhānta literature of the early centuries CE. The Siddhāntaśiromaṇi of Bhāskara II (12th century) represents a high point of mathematical sophistication, while later medieval commentators consolidated predictive methods.

    Practice/Methodology

Practitioners calculate birth charts (janma kundalī) using precise astronomical data, then interpret planetary placements through established yogas (combinations) and daśā systems (planetary periods). The Pañcāṅga—the five-limbed almanac—integrates Tithi, Vāra, Nakṣatra, Yoga, and Karaṇa for daily and event timing.

    Modern status

Jyotiṣa remains deeply embedded in Indian culture, influencing decisions about marriage, business ventures, and domestic rituals. Professional astrologers number in the hundreds of thousands across India, and digital tools now automate chart calculation while traditional gurukula training continues in select lineages.

    Verification notes

While the scientific consensus is that astrology is a pseudoscience, certain astronomical components—particularly the Sūryasiddhānta’s calculations of planetary periods—demonstrate genuine observational accuracy. The system’s cultural significance is well-documented, though predictive claims remain unverified by controlled studies.
