Jyotirmath (Uttar Amnaya Peetham)
Jyotirmath (Joshimath) in the Chamoli Himalaya is the Uttarāmnāya (northern) Amnaya Matha — the Shankara seat of the north, gateway to Badrinath, and the lineage from which Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s and other modern movements claim transmission.
Overview
Tradition attributes the founding to Adi Shankaracharya (with Totakacharya named its first acharya in the lists); the matha at Joshimath (ancient Jyotirpitha) stands above the Alaknanda; its documented history includes long periods of vacancy and 20th-century restorations (the succession disputes of the 1940s–50s are part of the record — Brahmananda Saraswati’s appointment as Shankaracharya in 1941 being the most consequential, seeding the TM movement).
Core teachings
Advaita Vedanta of the northern seat; Atharvaveda association; Badri-Vishal (Badrinath) as the tutelary worship (Narasimha at Joshimath as the presiding deity).
Practice and work
Worship at the ancient Narasimha temple (the sitting idol whose left arm’s thinning is an omen-tradition for the Himalaya), veda learning, and the Shankaracharya’s teaching role.
Modern status
Active with its own Shankaracharya lineage (and parallel claims — the encyclopedia notes the competing successions neutrally); the 2023 Chamoli infrastructure works (the town’s subsidence episode) brought Jyotirmath national attention.
