    Ismaili Nizari

Ismaili Nizari is the largest branch of Ismaili Shi’ism, led by the Aga Khan, and is known for its emphasis on the living Imam’s spiritual authority, intellectual tradition, and progressive engagement with modernity.

    Overview

The Nizari Ismailis trace their leadership through the line of Imams descending from Nizar ibn al-Mustansir, who contested the succession to the Fatimid Caliphate in the 11th century. After the fall of the Fatimid Caliphate, the Nizari Imams continued in privacy, eventually emerging under the leadership of the Aga Khans in the 19th century. The current 49th hereditary Imam is Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who has led the community since 1957.

    Core Teachings

The Nizari Ismailis believe in the continuing spiritual authority of the hereditary Imam, who serves as the living guide of the community. The tradition emphasizes the inner (batin) dimensions of Islam alongside the outer (zahir) practices, teaches the progressive interpretation of scripture according to the needs of each age, and values intellect, reason, and education as essential to spiritual development. The community upholds the Shahada, daily prayers, fasting, and charitable giving while embracing engagement with modernity.

    Practice and Ritual

Nizari Ismailis perform daily prayers (often in congregational form), observe Ramadan fasting, and pay tithes (dasond) to the Imam. The community maintains distinctive religious buildings (Jama’at Khanas) where both prayer and community gatherings take place. Practices include the recitation of specific prayers and litanies, commemorations of significant events in Ismaili history, and the pursuit of education and social service as forms of worship.

    Modern Status

The Nizari Ismaili community numbers approximately 10–15 million worldwide, with significant populations in Central Asia, South Asia, East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is one of the world’s largest private development agencies. The community is known for its emphasis on education, cultural preservation, and humanitarian service.
