Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine developed in the late 18th century, based on the principle of “like cures like” and widely practiced in India.
Overview
Homeopathy was founded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s and introduced to India during British colonial rule. It has since become deeply integrated into Indian healthcare, with government-run homeopathic hospitals and a dedicated Ministry of AYUSH recognizing it alongside Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga, and Naturopathy. India is home to the world’s largest network of homeopathic practitioners and institutions.
History and Legend
Hahnemann developed homeopathy after experimenting with cinchona bark (used for malaria) on himself, noting it produced malaria-like symptoms. He formulated the Law of Similars and the principle of potentization through serial dilution and succussion. Homeopathy arrived in India around 1810 through European settlers and quickly gained popularity due to its gentle approach and compatibility with Indian sensibilities. The Indian Institute of Homoeopathic Medicine was established in Kolkata in 1881, and the Central Council of Homeopathy was constituted in 1973 under the Homoeopathy Central Council Act.
Architecture and Features
Homeopathic pharmacies in India follow Good Manufacturing Practices prescribed by the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India. Major pharmacies like SBL, Dr. Reckeweg, and Welcome Cure operate large-scale manufacturing facilities. Homeopathic hospitals range from small clinics to multi-department institutions like the Dr. Anjali Chatterjee Regional Research Institute in Kolkata and the National Institute of Homoeopathy in Delhi. The system uses ultra-diluted substances derived from plants, minerals, and animal products.
Modern Status
India has over 250,000 registered homeopathic practitioners and more than 200 homeopathic colleges offering degree programs. The Ministry of AYUSH has established a separate department for homeopathy, and the system is covered under public health programs including the National Health Mission for conditions like chronic diseases, allergies, and pediatric illnesses.
