Himalayan Institute
The Himalayan Institute is the yoga and meditation organization founded by Swami Rama (1971, in the United States), rooted in the Himalayan sannyasa lineage he represented and known for its early laboratory demonstrations of voluntary autonomic control.
Overview
Swami Rama’s demonstrations at the Menninger Clinic (1970s — voluntary control of heartbeat, temperature, brainwaves under laboratory conditions) made the Institute the scientific face of meditation research; its headquarters (Honesdale, Pennsylvania) and the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (Dehradun, 1989) carry the work.
Core teachings
The Himalayan tradition: systematic meditation (superconscious meditation), the lineage’s tantric-hatha techniques, and the scripture-based philosophy (the Upanishads and Yoga Sutra taught as one path); swami Rama’s “living spirituality” emphasis.
Practice and work
Meditation and hatha teacher trainings; the quarterly Yoga International (a major yoga periodical); the Dehradun hospital and rural development programs (the HITH’s medical and community work in Garhwal); research collaborations in psychophysiology.
Modern status
The Institute continues in the United States and India; Swami Rama’s books (Living with the Himalayan Masters) remain its core texts; the lineage continues under his successors.
