    Headstand (Sirsasana Practice)

Headstand is the general practice of balancing the body inverted on the head.

    Overview

The headstand, known as Sirsasana in Sanskrit, is one of the most important and beneficial yoga postures. It is practiced across virtually all traditions of Hatha Yoga and is considered essential for advanced practice.

    Method/Content

The standard headstand uses the forearms and crown of the head as a base, with hands clasped behind the head. The body is lifted to vertical through controlled movement. Variations include single-leg lifts, lotus position in headstand, and walks. The practitioner maintains engagement of the core and legs throughout.

    Purpose/Benefits

Regular headstand practice improves circulation, strengthens the upper body, and stimulates the endocrine system. It is believed to reverse the aging process and improve mental function. The pose builds courage and determination.
