Hatha Yoga (Esoteric)
Hatha Yoga (yoga of force) is a tantric yoga system emphasizing physical purification and energy control.
Overview
Hatha Yoga (Sanskrit hatha yoga, “yoga of force”) is a tantric system of yoga that emphasizes the practice of asana (postures), pranayama (breath control), mudra (gestures), and bandha (locks) to purify the physical and subtle bodies and awaken kundalini energy. It is distinguished from raja yoga (which emphasizes meditation) and kundalini yoga (which emphasizes energy awakening) by its focus on the physical practices of purification.
Philosophical Context
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (by Svatmarama, 15th century) is the foundational text of hatha yoga, describing the physical practices of yoga in detail. The Shiva Samhita and the Gheranda Samhita provide additional instructions on hatha yoga practices. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika states: “Hatha yoga is the means by which raja yoga (the yoga of meditation) is attained.” This indicates that hatha yoga is a preparatory practice for the more advanced meditative practices of raja yoga.
Interpretations
In tantra tradition, hatha yoga is the physical component of the tantric practice — it is performed to purify the body and prepare it for the more advanced practices of kundalini yoga and raja yoga. In modern yoga, hatha yoga has been popularized as the “foundation” of all yoga styles — most modern yoga classes are based on hatha yoga principles. In philosophy, hatha yoga is distinguished from jnana yogantry/jnana) yoga (knowledge) and bhakti yogaopic/bhakti) yoga (devotion) as the path of physical purification.
